KAUPAPA
Learn and be inspired from our own Indigenous Cultural Lens and engagement in Pūtaiao, Science, Taiao and Environmental Education
PŪTAKE (purpose)
The purpose of this marae based wānanga is to bring Ngāpuhi taitamariki together with kaumatua kuia. Provide a space for the sharing of knowledge, the strengthening of whakapapa to both taiao and one another, while encouraging kaitiakitanga roles in our Ngāpuhi communities.
Taitamariki who have an interest in science, environmental sustainability, maths and technology will get to participate in some environmental action whilst learning about a number of other environmental kaupapa.
The wānanga provides a range of options for outdoor hands-on learning activities such as water quality investigation, monitoring and assessment, pest management, and rongoā Māori. Learning and engaging with our environment as a ‘living laboratory’ Pūtaiao approach. This is where science concepts are already embedded in matauranga Māori, te reo me ōna tikanga, making education more meaningful, to help taitamariki Māori reclaim science in Ngāpuhi.
We hope to engage and familiarise taitamariki with environmental initiatives that lift their understanding of kaitiakitanga, and show them how they might be able to contribute to their iwi and hapu in the future.
Through this kaupapa we are aiming to increase the number of our young people to pursue careers in science, environmental sustainability, technology and business.
